Flat Roofing Systems

Flat Roofing Systems

These roof systems are sometimes referred to as “tar and gravel roofs” asphalt BUR is the most common type of flat roof at this time. Icon Roofing is expert at installing and repairing BUR roofing systems.

BUR systems generally are composed of alternating layers of bitumen and reinforcing fabrics that create a finished membrane. The number of plies in a cross section is the number of plies on a roof: The term “four plies” denotes a four ply roof membrane construction.. Built up roofs generally are considered to be fully adhered if applied directly to roof decks or insulation. The reinforcing fabrics also are called roofing felts or ply sheets.

The bitumen typically used in BUR roof systems is asphalt, coal tar or cold-applied adhesive. The asphalt or coal tar is heated in a kettle or tanker and then applied by mop or mechanical spreader. Asphalt is a petroleum product refined from crude oil; coal tar is derived from the distillation of coal. Cold-applied adhesives typically are solvent-based asphalts that don’t have to be heated in a kettle or tanker.

Hot Roofing Systems

Hot Roofing Systems

These systems are well known for cutting down on energy consumption rates. In addition hot roofing systems are known to be very strong rejecting even the tiniest of leaks. If comfort and durability are your most sought after values this may be the system for your business.

Two-Ply Membranes

Two Ply Membranes

A Two-Ply torch-on membrane system consists of a fiberglass reinforced mat, or polyester mat sandwiched between two layers of rubberized asphalt.

Membrane roofing is a type of roofing system for buildings. It is used on flat or nearly flat roofs to prevent leaks and move water off the roof. Membrane roofs are most commonly made from synthetic rubber, thermoplastic (TPO or similar material), or modified bitumen (“torch down”). These types of materials have become the replacement for asphalt roof systems, an older, less effective type of flat roofing system. Membrane roofs are most commonly used in commercial applications, though they are becoming increasingly more common in residential application.

These two ply roofing systems are very durable but must be professionally installed. We are qualified to do install both “Torch-On “and TPO roofing systems.

Rubber Roofing Systems

Rubber Roofing Systems

EPDM Roofing (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) more commonly referred to as Rubber Roofing may be the solution you’ve been searching for. Rubber Roofing is highly effective against intense rain, snow, water buildup, wind pressure, cracking, and leaking. What’s truly interesting about rubber roofing today is that it has evolved to the point of almost replacing shingles.

Essentially, rubber manufacturers wanted to find a way to boost revenues and realized that the benefits of rubber roofing were huge but most people were not a fan of the flat roofing on there house. As a result they invested in a way to produce rubber tiles that resemble shingles. It’s worth noting that this option is environmentally sound due to the recycling of rubber and it is highly resistant to fire .

TPO & PVC

Tpo & Pvc Roofing System

Another example of a Single-Ply Membrane is the thermoplastic TPO or PVC roofing system. These membranes can be repeatedly softened by heating or hardened when cooled. Because of the materials’ chemical nature, thermoplastic membranes typically are seamed by heat welding with hot air or solvent welding.

The most common thermoplastic roof membranes are PVC and TPO.

Modified Bitumen

Modified Bitumen, Commercial Roofing

Polymer-modified roof membranes are composed of reinforcing fabrics that serve as carriers for the hot polymer-modified bitumen as it is manufactured into a roll material. MB roof system membranes are composed of multiple layers, much like BUR membranes. MB roof systems typically are installed as a two-ply system and almost always are fully adhered.
